What's a Blog?

I just finished a 7 year game for the Metaverse League (MVL) which was required to be a Tech win. Anyway, it turned out that I had close relations with the only AI left in the game and it seemed like a good opportunity to check out the scoring differences between the different victory conditions. I know this had been done a long time ago but I was unsure of how accurate the ratios were and under what kind of game they were made.

So I ran through the 4 different end conditions and in the case of the Tech (Beyond Mortality), Alliance (Political Victory) and Military (Military Conquest) victories, I was able to end the game in the precisely same turn with the same number of ships, population, income and money spent on research.

In the case of the Influence win I was unable to win on the same turn and had to win the game 2 turns later.

I have screenshots from each of the four Endgame Summary screens. What is interesting is that in the 3 cases where I was able to end the game on the same turn I had identical results in the four components of score and in these three cases the ratios of the total score was exact with no rounding.

Here's the Tech win (Beyond Mortality) screenshot.

And here's the Alliance win (Political Victory) screenshot.

One very interesting thing to note is that the AI's scores do not change based on victory condition. I guess since none of the AI's actually won the game this probably makes sense.

The other interesting thing is that, as I mentioned, each of the four components of score are identical.

The final interesting thing is that the ratio of these two scores 39900/33250 = 1.2 exactly with no rounding.

Now here is the Military Conquest screenshot.

Again, the 4 components of scores are identical, the AI's scores are identical, and the ratio of the two scores, 66500/33250 = 2.0, is exact as well.

Finally here's the Influence win (Cultural Conquest) screenshot.

Note in this case I couldn't end the game until two turns beyond the other three end conditions but there's still some interesting information here. For one, as expected, each of the four components of score are slightly larger than in the other 3 cases. The AI's still have the same scores but with such low scores for a 7 year game it isn't surprising that they round off to the same value.

In this case the ratio is 46900/33250 which is slightly larger than 1.4. However based on the above results I have to assume that the ratio of 1.4 is actually exact and if I had been able to end the game on the same turn as the other games then I would have scored precisely 33250*1.4 = 46550.

So in summary we have the following ratios.

Beyond Mortality = 1.0
Political Victory = 1.2
Cultural Conquest = 1.4
Military Conquest = 2.0

Truly awesome achievement. To finish each game on the exact turn (okay), with identical components, displays a dedication that few of us can match.

I doff my hat to you, sir. And only that mine were as magnificent as yours.

Truly awesome achievement. To finish each game on the exact turn (okay), with identical components, displays a dedication that few of us can match.

This has been done before but I do suspect that it was tested in a relatively short game and the inevitable minor differences would be noticed. In my case this was a game that I ended a particular way for league play but it just so happened to turn out that the final AI was already "close" which allowed the alliance win which is easy to arrange to occur any turn you want.

Plus the final AI had been pared down to a single planet so again the military conquest was easy enough to occur on the same turn.

The only condition that was slightly difficult was the influence win which I miss-timed anyway. Basically for my "normal" metaverse games I just disable all victory conditions except military victory but for the metaverse league (MVL) part of the challenge is to get a randomly selected specific victory condition while having all victory conditions enabled.

This adds an extra element of challenge since the games receive bonus points based on top four scores or top four fastest games. The trick to get a high score is to conquer all AI's except for the last one exiled to a single planet, preferably a PQ3, and then build up a dozen or so influence starbases and give them to the last AI so that you can avoid the premature influence win. Only once this is juggled properly can you then build up your income, population and military to pump up your score. Anyway each month’s game settings are randomly selected although the max galaxy size is limited to medium just to keep the time commitment to a reasonable level.

Anyone interested just check in on one of the following Metaverse League threads.

People of all abilities and levels are welcome to join and get assigned to teams along with some of the true experts of the game. The purpose is as much to help folks improve their play and general camaraderie as it is the competition.

Great, thanks for the more specific scoring info. It's slightly different than what I had thought.

That is very cool.

It is a shame i think that the victory conditions have different scores at all.

Yeah that is annoying. I enjoy influence victory the most out of the non-military, but almost never do it anymore, because I want to score well for the Metaverse.

This information is most useful because it means that if a league wants to allow a player to win with any condition--the league can re-weigh the scores to match whatever criteria the league thinks applies. So for example if the league thinks all conditions should be equal for that game, they can just calculate the differences away using those ratios.  Of course this would all have to be manually done and tracked.

Thanks! It has bugged me about the score difference of the winning conditions. I thought like before that "Technological Victory" gives more score then "Influence Victory", but now I know the slight difference of it.

Holy necroposts, Batman!

Anyway, the different forms of scoring annoy me too. In fact, this is why I don't play Metaverse to begin with - I don't want my goals or playstyle having to be altered just to score higher. I can understand where this is coming from, though - military wins probably are the hardest, at least with the settings I use.
